We launched another worthwhile project in Poonewa located approximately 50 km from Anuradhapura in December 2007. This was the brain child of Lucky (who was then the Commander North Central Naval Area) and his affable wife Ruwini who selected this one roomed Montessori which lay a few kilometers off the A-9 road in a hamlet known as Kuda Halmillewa. The project entailed renovating and expanding the classroom and construction of a store room replete with a steel cabinet, a first aid box and chairs. The funding was exclusively collected from the Group of 70 Committee over a period of time and all children (comprising 9 boys and 16 girls) were presented with a gift pack containing books, stationery, and sweets. The children were also treated to a Biriyani lunch. The teachers were presented with umbrellas. Our heartfelt gratitude to all who participated and especially to Lucky for arranging all manpower resources and security.
